Enjoy Your 4th

I will find myself heading north on Monday to spend the holiday with my parents at their country home. We will make our way to Boyne Falls to watch the lights over the water. I am hoping the weather holds out as the past couple of years it has been very cold.

I am making headway on the inside of the house. The yard is another story altogether. I need to repair one of the tires on the riding mower. I need it to cool down a bit so I can use the push mower and find my front lawn again. I will in the meantime keep pitching and tossing on the inside. I've even managed to pack up a few items.

I have heard that some places are thinking of canceling the fireworks displays because of the chance of fire. I  have also heard that people shooting off their own fireworks will be billed by the fire department should they inadvertently cause a fire.

Whatever the 4th has in store for us weather wise I will survive as I will remember what our forefathers went through to give us the freedoms we enjoy.

I will enjoy time with my parents and away for a few days. Then it's back to the house and work on the up coming novels.

Be safe and enjoy your holiday.

House For Sale

This is the truck I want to see parked outside my house. I want to be loading it so that I can move. Yep. That's my big wish.

To that end I will be off-line for the rest of the week. I'm getting my house in order to put it on the market. I am finishing the spare room tomorrow, then on to my bedroom and the bathroom. From there it is the utility room and the entry. I'll do the kitchen and living room then head upstairs. There I will be heaving a ton of things. It is long past time some of them go.

I have a few boxes so I'll be packing up some more tea pots and some miniature china. I am running out of places to put boxes. My downstairs closets are pretty full and my upstairs closet doesn't have much room left in it either.

I am ready for a permanent change. I don't like Michigan winters. I have never been a fan of winter. I like warmth and crave sunlight. I am hoping to relocate near the ocean and the beach. They don't have to be right at my door, but close driving distance would be nice. A yard that will support a pool would make my day.

Once the inside is done, I can go to the real estate office. The outside will be a breeze. I need to mow lawn and cut down some weeds. I'm replanting a flower garden and planting some lily of the valley in my back. I am ready for it to be gone. It is too big for me. I don't use the upstairs except to collect junk. It needs a family in it. someone who will use it to it's fullest.

So, if you are looking for a home in rural northern Michigan, it's close to three golf courses and a small dirt bike track. Is easy on and off the expressway and only three miles from town (including the schools), just give me a holler. I'd be happy to show you the place.

Neglecting My Blog

I find that since I am not blogging daily about a specific topic, I am neglecting my blog. So, today, I'm just going to ramble.

First, I am down 14 pounds since I started watching my food intake in May. I am also down to half a tablet of my diabetes meds in the morning and half at night. That makes me extremely happy. I will be looking for a new doctor soon. I've been given the name of a good one and will be looking into that as I come up on my next round of testing.

My book signing in Montrose was a success for those who came. We had comedy provided by my family and I was able to visit with people I have not seen in a long time. All in all a good time.

I am looking forward to the book signing in Frankenmuth next month. Being in a bookstore and not having to worry about the money end will be different. I'm looking forward to meeting new people as they come through.

Where we go from there, I'm not entirely sure. I am keeping my options open. We are building a press kit for me and that will help. I suspect there will be a couple of newspaper interviews coming up. I am ready for them. I don't think they can ask me anything I can't answer. At least I hope not.

I am making progress on my house but it's not going fast enough for my liking. I want it sold. I know where I want to be. I need to sell the house before I can get there.

I'm working on getting started on the co-authored book I'll be working on next. It's going to be a challenge because we are in different states, but I have faith if we want it to work, we'll make it work. I'm excited about it and looking forward to digging in.

Other than that, it's summer in Michigan.

Book Tour?

Well our book launch in May was done without books. Our book signing last week was a huge success. We are now scheduled for a book signing in Frankenmuth, Michigan on July 28th. I have been asked to do a book tour.
We are working on it. I have at least three libraries in Michigan that we are looking at. There is the possibility of a bookstore in Wisconsin and one in the Pittsburg, PA area. A friend just told me she would check with her library in Dallas, TX.
We are looking into a bookstore on Johns Island, SC for when I return there this coming winter. I'd say this is going to be a book tour.
I also know that Cold Case: Sleeping Dogs Lie will be available at Bouchercon in Cleveland in October.  So, I'm taking this on the road.
This is exciting. The book signing in South Carolina will feature my second book in the series as well. Crossing the Line is in first round edits. It is due for release on Black Friday.

30 Day Diabetes Cure Update

I am well beyond my 30 days. I'm down 10lbs. It should probably be more. I need to find a walking routine. But I will live with the loss as is. I am no longer taking any diabetes meds at night. I cut down to one in the morning and we will see how that works.

I feel great! I was able to resist the cupcakes at last night's book signing. I sent some home with my sister, my mother, my daughter, a friend,  and I still had some I left with the library staff. I ate some fresh veggies.

All-in-all I believe the diet is a success. I also believe that if I continue to use what I learned I will continue to lose the weight I need to lose and eventually be off the meds. That is the ultimate goal.

I hope anyone who followed along and is using the book as a guide is making progress. Best of luck to you.

Follow Up to Signing 2

There were about 20 people at the signing between 5 and 6pm. I did not get a lot of questions during the program. However by 6:30 I had gained maybe four or five more people. I also was approached with individual questions.

There were once again way too many cupcakes. I left a dozen with the library. A friend brought in a wonderful veggie tray and a fruit tray. The Friends of the Library were awesome. They provided table cloths,  coffee, tea, paper plates and napkins.

It helps to have the books on hand. It was also good to see old friends I haven't seen in years. Too many in some cases. Some of my family showed up and they are always good at heckling.

A friend brought me a business card from a bookstore owner. Turns out I know the owner and that's why he  brought the card. We may be looking at signing there.

Rumor has it we are going to turn this book signing thing into a tour. I could end up in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and next winter South Carolina. By the South Carolina one, the second book in my series will have been released. Oh and I heard a faint rumor about Wisconsin.

It could get very interesting. The book is taking off.

Book Signing Number 2

My second book signing is coming up this Thursday. I will be as close to where I grew up as I can get. I'll be six miles away in the town my daughter grew up in Montrose, Michigan.

All the books have arrived so I won't have to do this one without books. YEAH!!! Most of them are loaded into my car already. The UPS man was so nice he put the hard covers right into my trunk. I have carried four boxes of the paperbacks to the trunk and back seat.

Wednesday I pick up cupcakes from my step-daughter. She is making four dozen this time. All will have my book covers on them.

I have heard from several of my high school classmates that they will be there. That should be interesting. I've not seen some of them since graduation. A lot of years, one child, and three grandchildren ago. Seems like a lifetime.

I am hoping for a good turn out. I really don't want to have to haul 100 hard covers and 200 paperbacks back home. Ugh. I'd like to see most of them gone. Half of each is doable.

Whatever happens those who attend will have a good time. In you're in the area, feel free to drop in at the library. I'll be there from 5-7pm. If you can find Montrose, anyone can tell you how to get to the library.

Day 30-CELEBRATE

Congratulations!!!! You've achieved what the "experts" claim is impossible: you're reversing the disease they've labeled incurable. So, take a bow.

Welcome to the Diabetes-Healing Lifestyle. I am willing to bet you are looking, thinking, acting, and feeling better than you were 30 days ago. At least I hope you are, I know I am.

Celebrate by having a total diabetes healing day. Start with a diabetes healing breakfast. Pack up your healing lunch, snacks, and beverages so you won't be tempted to eat anything that will undermine your progress. Make time for physical activity. End the day with a diabetes healing dinner. Here are 10 suggests to make this day all about you.

  1. Get up earlier to give yourself extra time to appreciate the day and your accomplishments. Spend 20-30 minutes quietly contemplating or meditating.
  2. Celebrate with your favorite diabetes healing breakfast.
  3. Listen to some peaceful music as you eat and dress. Notice the changes you've made in the past four weeks, with a new body, attitude, and living space.
  4. Remind yourself to buy a big bouquet of flowers. Better yet, have them delivered to work.
  5. Pick a new spot to walk, holding your head up and proudly smiling at every one you meet.
  6. Make a plan to share this remarkable day with your special friends and family members. Let them know what you have accomplished and thank them for their support.
  7. Do something special just for you.
  8. Remind yourself that you now have every tool to keep progressing toward a full, happy, peaceful, and healthy life.
  9. Feel confident that you're well-equipped for the next phase of your life: Living free of the chains with which disease, pharmaceuticals, and junk food bind you.
  10. Let yourself feel gratitude for having made this huge change.
I AM VERY PROUD OF YOU!!!!

It's time for graduation, however this is not the end but the beginning of your new life. Continue to keep a daily journal of your activities and diet as a way of staying on track.

This has been an awesome journey for me. I have learned that I cannot take 1000 mg of Glucovance with dinner. If I do, my sugars drop drastically low. I like waking up in the morning, so I'm only taking 500mg at night.

My goals:
  1. Continue to follow the good eating habits I have learned.
  2. Get up and get moving. I need to walk.
  3. Start strength training. My daughter gave me some good exercises to start with.
  4. Recommend The 30 Day Diabetes Cure by Dr. Stefan Ripich to everyone.
  5. Periodically update my blog so you know how I'm doing.
  6. Take my after photo. Not sure I have a before, but I'll look. I'm not there yet.
  7. Answer any questions about my diabetes that my readers might have.
Best of luck to you.

Day 29- Eliminate Boredom

Boredom results from habitual, mind-numbing behaviors, and routines. Boredom also leads to eating. Remember we are trying to cut down on that? Find something to be passionate about.

Learn something new: Lifelong learners are deeply curious, and you can aspire to this habit, too. What is it you've always longed to do but didn't have time for? Fly an airplane? Skydive? Take art lessons? Learn a new language? Check with you local community college and see what they have to offer.

Your brain responds to challenges. Studies show that continued learning helps to ward of dementia and Alzheimer's. So, get off your duff and learn something new.

Take a cooking class: Learn to cook better meals for you and your family. It's one of the most satisfying activities in life.

Travel: Break out of your routine. Take a different route to work. Head out for hiking or biking in an area you've never seen before. Choose a cultural tour in a city you've never been to. Leave the tourist attractions behind and discover something new. Take an  eco-trip to learn about frogs in the Costa Rican rainforest.

Make time for pleasure: We all need "me" time. Make a ritual out or taking a candelit bath. Schedule a regular massage. Go to the park every Sunday morning so you can take off your shoes and walk in the grass. Dance in the rain.

Take Ghandi's advice: "Learn as if you were going to live forever. Live as if you were going to die tomorrow."

Become an artist: You can paint, learn to sculpt, write, or landscape by taking classes. How about photography?

Clear Out the Junk: transform your living space by decluttering. (I have personal issues with that.)
Here are some suggestions:
1) Give away all those diet books that failed you.
2) Donate movies and CD's to the library or a women's shelter. Or the local nursing home.
3) Take old clothes and kitchen utensils to your local community shop--Good Will, St. Vincent's, etc.
4) Pack up old photographs and mementos and send them to your children or nieces and nephews--new caretakers of the history.
5) Let go of people in your life who add nothing but drama, stress, or misery to it.
6) Stop picking at old wounds and endlessly rehashing injustices. Forgive everyone in your past who has ever wronged you.
7) Free yourself from the endless loop in which you're always the "innocent victim" of someone else's thoughtlessness.
8) Decide you'll never again utter the words, "I can't". I refused to let my students use that phrase in school. They could tell me they didn't understand, or it was difficult, or even I'm confused. But, NEVER "I can't."
9) Clean the basement, attic and/or garage. Tool shed if it needs it.
10) Step away from relationships that no longer support you.
11) Stop listening to the tape in your head that defeats you. Change your actions into something positive.
12) Catch yourself when you complain about problems and see if you can become the solution.
13) Admit when you've made poor choices, apologize if need be, and move on.

Share the Love

Overcome your limitations. You blood sugars, blood pressures, should be better. You should feel better. Now it's time to notice there is a big world out there that needs some TLC.

Here's how you can make a difference:

  • Children with no shoes.
  • Adults who can't read.
  • The elderly stuck in nursing homes with no one to talk to.
  • Veterans whose psyches and bodies are shattered.
  • Parents who can't provide a meal for their families.
  • Babies with no parents to care for them.
  • Women, children, and pets who've been abandoned.
  • Even members of your own family who feel forgotten.
You're not the same person who started this 29 days ago. You're different--and not just your health. You have started paying attention to life. You've chosen a healing path. What you have done is created your own miracle.

I personally learned to glass fuse this year. It's new and exciting. I have tons of hobbies. I crochet. Just ask anyone who knows me. I scrapbook. I can embroider and sew. As many know I write. That's my passion.
This has been a journey for me. I will fall off and have to get back on. I've not yet added bread back into my  diet. I have increased the amount of vegetables I eat and I'm eating fresh as often as I can.

I don't get in three meals and a snack. Usually two meals with a snack in between. I'm a work in progress. I'm not getting enough exercise. I spend too much time working at my computer. My mind goes in a million directions at once and it makes it hard for me to function at times. I am not off my meds, yet. I monitor my blood sugar every morning and at times when I feel off. I also monitor my blood pressure. Both readings are coming down nicely. As I get this all worked out for me, I know I will lose the weight I need to and the meds I so dislike.

Day 28-Add Supplements Ugh

I have issues with today. I am trying to get myself off medication. That means if I'm eating correctly I shouldn't need supplements. However Dr.Ripich says there are some good ones and they will help if your blood sugars get stuck on a plateau.

Be smart about supplements. Talk to YOUR doctor about taking supplements. They can interact with your meds.

Do NOT start supplements without talking to YOUR doctor. Because he stresses this in the book. I'm not even going to tell you about them. If you are taking a good multi-vitamin and Vitamin D from day 16, stick with that until you talk to your doctor. Then only add the ones your doctor thinks you need.

I am not a doctor so I am not going to tell you what supplements you need. That is for you and your doctor to decide. Each person will be different.

Day 27-Add Green Drinks

Yes, I said green drinks. Phytonutrients from plants become a concentrated superfood in green drinks, adding a nutritional  punch to help knock out diabetes!!!

Here's a way to get the massive nutrient power of leafy greens in a much smaller package. You can drink it every day and still eat green veggies.

Most of us don't get enough fresh organic greens in our daily diet. I will be the first to confess that I don't. It doesn't matter how many servings we try to eat. This tall green drink will cover you on days when you are short on veggies.

I saw one the other day with kale, a banana, and strawberries. It was all blended to liquid. I know you can put in spinach, a banana, and other berries, too. Search on-line for green juice recipes. You can also add carrots to your green juice.

Keep you doctor updated on what you are doing as you make wiser food choices, because your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol could drop like a lead balloon. You will need to adjust your medications.

My doctor is not supportive of this at all, in fact, won't listen to what I am doing. You know I'm looking for a new one. My sugars have been so much better. My blood pressure runs low to normal. I am feeling better.
Make sure you have the supports you need.

Day 26- Add Strength Training

You're already walking now is the time to add strength training. It's the whole body diabetes healer. As you build lean muscle, you body clears more sugar from your blood. It's that simple.

So where do you start? Do you need a trainer? Do you have to join a gym? Stop hold the presses. Start small and build.

  • Weight: Beginners should start with light hand weights (yes dumbbells). This weight will be different everyone. Experiment until you find a weight that you can lift straight over your head (called a military press) 20 times in a row. Don't have weights, start with soup or vegetable cans...full not empty.
  • Repetitions: Also called "reps" this is the number of times you will perform the exercise at one time. It is recommended that you start with 20. The last three to five reps are the most important because they're the ones that actually build lean muscle mass. Keep your form good all the way to the end, increasing the weights only when your reps become easy.
  • Sets: A "set" is one complete series of repetitions. Do three sets per exercise. The final set should be difficult, causing exertion.
  • Number of exercises: Some people prefer to spend an entire session on a region of the body (say the entire torso, arms, shoulders, chest, and back or the lower body, legs, gluteals, an lower back).
  • Days per week: Start with two or three days per week, always resting your muscles a day in between. Consistency is essential, so get into the habit.
  • Confuse your muscles: Our bodies are exceptionally adept at adapting to change. If you do the same workout with the same amount of weight week after week, you muscles will say "ho-hum" and won't improve. So mix it up.
If you've never done any of this before you might want to consult an expert. Find someone in your area who knows about strength training and can help get you started. DON'T FORGET YOUR CORE. A trainer can show you core strengthening exercises. These are key to building total body strength, because your core (you abdominals and lower-back muscles) keep you rock-steady while you work your various muscles groups.

Location isn't everything. Where you work out is far less important than doing it with consistency. Some of my patients love the resistance machines at their local gym, as they do offer the advantage of providing support for your back.

Mirror, mirror on the wall: it's not vanity, it's mindfulness. Strength-training in front of a mirror is extremely helpful in noticing a crooked arm or uneven lift for monitoring your overall form.

Top 10 Strength Training Tips
  1. Hydrate: Drink two large glasses of water an hour before your workout, and keep you water bottle with you to sip between sets. Weight training should make you thristy. If it doesn't, you may need to increase your weight.
  2. Eat something to power your workout: Yogurt with nuts...whole grain bread with a smear of peanut butter and a glass of milk...a banana. Whatever healing food suits you, keep it light and eat it 45 minutes to an hour before you begin.
  3. Raise your temp: Climb on a stationary bike or stairmaster to warm up. (You can also do five to ten minutes of brisk walking). Raising your body temp primes your muscles for weight-bearing  activity and gets your heart pumping, giving you more strength when you begin.
  4. Snack afterward: Eating an apple, banana, or orange plus some protein after a workout feeds your muscles and replenishes your blood sugar. (You can add a piece of cheese to your fruit, or fork up a little tuna or salmon.) And keep hydrating, because water flushes toxins from your body.
  5. Get a lesson in good form: Sloppy form leads to injuries. Ask a local trainer to give you a one-hour session on how to lift.
  6. Go slowly: Weight training isn't about speed. In fact, it's more beneficial when done slowly and deliberately, with attention to form. Like yoga, this mindfulness creates a calming meditative space while you're working out.
  7. Isolate muscles for the best results: When you first start working with weights, it's natural to tense up your whole body when you lift. Instead, focus all that tension solely on the muscles that you're working, relaxing those that aren't directly involved (like your other hand and your jaw).
  8. Breathe!!!! Holding your breath during a lift can spike your blood pressure. Remember: inhale first and exhale while you lift. Inhale again as you release.
  9. Stretch: After a lifting session (and between  sets), stretching keeps you muscles loose and flexible. Always give yourself a day off between sessions so muscles can rest and repair.
  10. Pain isn't helpful: Forget the adage "No Pain, No Gain." If an exercise hurts, stop immediately, you could be hurting yourself. Overworking (or poor form) can cause torn tendons.
Not convinced yet? Here are some more strength-training benefits:
  • Builds energy, which improves your metabolism, which in turn helps you lose fat while gaining lean muscle. Muscle uses a lot more energy than fat, even when you're just relaxing on the couch.
  • Leads to more efficient use of energy, including glucose and the calories you take in. Calories are needed to power your workout, and you'll be using plenty!
  • Brings greater flexibility. Incorporating a range of motion in your routine improves flexibility in your joints.
  • Strengthens your bones. Weight-bearing exercise has been proven again and again to build strong bones...and protect against osteoporosis...because it signals your body to send more calcium to bones, increasing their density.
Exactly what are you waiting for? This is your invitation to start.

Day 25-Eliminate Toxins

I attempted bread with oat flour using a regular bread recipe...oops. Epic fail. I am now in possession of a good recipe and I will try again.

There are tons and tons of reports that link chemical toxins to a higher risk of diabetes. So today we learn how to get rid of some.

They're everywhere: Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) from the environment accumulate in body tissue, stressing the liver, as it tries to eliminate them causing cell mutations (cancer), disrupting the endocrine system (that includes hormones, blood sugar, metabolism, and the reproductive system). Basically you're screwed.

So what are POPs?
  • Antibiotics and growth hormones. These are routinely added to the grains eaten by factory feedlot animals. They lodge in their fat and in you body when you eat these meats. What you body is able to eliminate ends up in your neighborhood waste-water system (which is recycled into tap water.)
  • Pesticides and fungicides are routinely sprayed on non-organic crops and absorbed by the plants themselves. These have long been linked to the development of various cancers.
  • Genetically modified crops (GMO) which have already had their very DNA tinkered with. There are currently NO long term studies on how they affect animals or humans. Yet they are in your local market.
  • Meats and vegetables packaged in plastic and styrofoam, two sources of PVC(polyvinyl chloride). BPA(bisphenol A) and styrene--all known human toxins. In addition, BPA is linked to higher incidence of diabetes!!!!!! Most food cans are lined with BPA and hard plastic water bottles and baby bottles are also made of it.
  • Dioxins and furans are produced during industrial processes such as bleaching wood pulp to make paper and from burning trash (including medical and municipal waste). They're also in wood preservatives and garden and agricultural herbicides. Most human exposure comes from eating animals(or dairy products) in whose tissues these chemicals have accumulated.
Our lives are filled with plastic and chemicals. Just look around your home to see plastic milk jugs and cleaning products. Still not convinced??? Research links to toxins and diabetes. Journal of the American Medical Association, 2008 reported on people and plastic. Hit up Google, Bing or another search engine to see what is out there.

So, how do you protect yourself? For one thing if you are following the 30 day diabetes cure you have been detoxing since day one. Here's how:

  • By eliminating processed foods and factory meats, you've been removing a major source of toxic chemicals from your life.
  • Loading up on veggies, fruits, and whole grains provides extraordinary support to your digestive system--including your liver--in clearing toxins from your body.
  • And our focus on fiber works in your favor, too, since fiber binds to wastes and moves them out of your system.
  • And on Day 13, with the start of your walking program...
  • Your daily exercise began stimulating your respiratory system--heart and lungs--all natural detoxifiers!!!
  • As the weight comes off, you shed the fat that stores toxins.
And bonus as of Day 3 when you quit sugary drinks and replaced them with water, you began flushing your body with one of life's greatest detoxifiers. Water is the best choice for washing away impurities.

You don't really need a special detox diet if you have been following this one. It's been done for you without anything drastic.

Here are 11 ways to detoxify your environment:

  1. Get a water filter. Stop buying bottled water--it's bad for your budget and all those plastic bottles represent an environmental disaster. Instead, buy a high quality water filter to remove pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and other impurities from your drinking water. You don't have to buy an expensive one, but the investment will be worth it. Dr. Ripich recommends Katadyn Combi Water Filter, with an attachment for your tap. It will filter 13,000 gallons of drinking water before requiring a replacement filter.Use a glass bottle, glass-lined thermos, or stainless steel bottle to carry your drinking water with you.
  2. Pitch the plastic. Replace plastic wrap, bags, and storage containers with good old-fashioned wax paper or foil. Wax paper sandwich bags are available in natural foods stores.
  3. Go with glass. Look for Pyrex storage containers with rubber lids, in a variety of sizes. They may seem heavy to carry to work, but they're far safer for your food. especially in the microwave. (But NO lids please).
  4. Remember code 245: If you must purchase plastic products, choose those with recycle codes 2, 4, and 5.
  5. Nix the nonstick:  Replace nonstick cookware with good old steel baking sheets, glass pans, and casseroles, and cast-iron or copper clad skillets. Teflon and other nonstick coatings decompose at high heat--even if you don't cook at super high temps. Long-term studies on these health hazards haven't been conducted yet, why wait?
  6. Un-plastic your utensils: Pitch plastic serving and cooking utensils--now that you've ditched your nonstick pans, there's no need for them anyway. Your cast iron skillet will be fine with the same wooden spoons and metal spatulas your grandma used.
  7. Can the cans: Purchase tuna in foil packets. Buy frozen veggies and soups in waxed cardboard boxes. (better yet, make your own soup).
  8. Clean green: Advertisers want you to believe there is different product for every cleaning task (but, of course, you don't). There's a host of toxic chemicals in most cleaning products, and manufacturing them generates huge amounts of environmental waste. Wean yourself off standard household cleaners with a trip to a natural food store. Or look on-line for ways to make your own green products. Ask Grandma what she used.
  9. Avoid toxic chemicals in body care products. Using chemical-laden make-up and other body products can add an astonishing five pounds to toxic chemicals to your body each year.
  10. Better body care: Chemical-free products for your body are more expensive than others, but just like buying organic produce, wild salmon, and grass-fed beef, the return is worth the extra outlay.
  11. Forget fragrances: Remove all air fresheners and scented dryer sheets, lotions, and candles from your house today. Including anything with "fake" scent. Then your respiratory system will work more properly.
That pretty much sums up POPs. How are you going to detoxify your environment?

October Already

I'm not sure where the time has flown. June was an exiting month. July was a mess. I had a change of medication which caused me to gain...
